VINTON, Va. – The 2024 high school football season came and went, delivering some explosive plays, big wins and of course some standout athletes from in and around southwest and central Virginia. With that, now comes the time to honor those who stood above the rest with the annual 1st and 10 Trophy Tour with a visit to William Byrd.
It was during week 4 when junior quarterback Cannin Lutz passed for 277 yards and scored 4 total touchdowns in a shutout win over Bassett. Lutz helped Byrd start the season 4-0 for the first time since 2018 proving to be a perfect piece to the puzzle for the Terriers who went on to win back-to-back region titles.
“Yeah, I kind of try to do my best to kind of repeat games like that and that’s always the goal for each week is always have the best game that I can and that’s you know try to pick up the team whenever if we’re slacking somewhere else,” Lutz said. “Try to pick them up, you know through the air on the ground. So, it’s whatever working that week.”
“We changed some things in the offense and emphasized some different things based off the personnel including him and some of the guys around him,” said William Byrd head coach Brad Lutz. “And when you put all those things together and having really good o-line play on offense, we were able to have a really good season offensively.”
Diving deeper on Lutz 2024 success, he set five school records last season. He had the most passing attempts (225), completions (139) and yards (2,006). He also had the most completions (18) and passing yards (277) in a single game.
Lutz was a 1st team All-District and All-Region honoree.
