SALEM, Va. – Salem City Schools announced the passing of June Long in a social media post on Wednesday.
According to Salem City Schools, Long passed away on Sunday at the age of 94.

Long was the first woman appointed to Salem’s School Board and later served as the governing body’s first female chairperson.
The district said the following in its social media post:
HISTORIC SALEM SCHOOL BOARD CHAIR, JUNE LONG, PASSES AT AGE 94.
June Long passed away on June 15 at the age of 94. She was the first woman appointed to Salem’s School Board and she later served as the governing body’s first female chairperson.
Mrs. Long was instrumental in the formative years of the division giving of her time and talents from 1983-1997. She was the Board’s Chair from 1993-1995. Mrs. Long also served three years on the school board when Salem was still part of Roanoke County’s schools, prior to 1983.
