ROANOKE, VAUPDATE:

Two people and a cat are injured, and one cat is dead after an early morning apartment fire in Roanoke.

At 4:39 AM, firefighters were called to a fire at an apartment complex on Southway Drive SW.

When Engine 8 arrived, they found heavy flames and quickly upgraded the response to a 2 Alarm.

Fire crews worked fast to evacuate residents and put out the fire.

By 6:01 AM, the fire was under control with no further damage expected.

Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Firefighters also rescued two cats, but sadly, one cat did not survive.

About 18 residents are now displaced and are getting help from the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.

Officials ask people to avoid the area while emergency teams finish their work.

Fire crews responded to a blaze in the 3700 block of Southway Drive in south Roanoke, near Tanglewood Mall.

Officials confirm the fire is now under control.
