Lynchburg Police identify 25-year-old victim following shooting investigation in Lynchburg

May 7, 11 p.m. update:

The E.C. Glass Boys Basketball team and E.C. Glass High School are mourning the loss of ZayKeese Brown, a 2019 alumnus and former player on the E.C. Glass basketball team.

The team said the following in a social media post Wednesday:

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a cherished former player, ZayKeese Brown. Affectionately known as “Koos,” he was an extraordinary athlete who made a lasting impact on our E.C. Glass basketball program. As a dynamic forward wearing the number 10, he brought not only his remarkable talent but also an infectious smile that lit up the court.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. This is a tremendous loss for our program, but we will always carry the spirit of number 10 with us, forever present in the stands. Please know that Coach DJ, the staff, and all current and former players stand united in support, sending our thoughts and prayers to his loved ones. Rest in peace, Koos—we know you’re soaring high, playing the game you loved in the sky."

May 7, Update:

The Lynchburg Police Department has identified the 25-year-old victim in Tuesday’s malicious wounding investigation on Bedford Avenue.

LPD has identified the victim as 25-year-old ZayKeese Amarius Brown, of Lynchburg. LPD says their thoughts and prayers are with Brown’s family, friends and loved ones.

LPD believes that the incident is isolated and there is no threat to the community at this time.

10 p.m. Update:

Lynchburg Police provided an update on their malicious wounding investigation on Tuesday night.

According to LPD, police responded to a report of a malicious wounding in the 2000 block of Bedford Ave. at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found multiple individuals administering life-saving measures to a 25-year-old man with a chest wound, believed to be the result of a gunshot. Despite their efforts, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at LGH.

According to LPD, preliminary investigation indicates that the victim had been playing video games in an online chat room with friends. After the victim stopped communicating, his friends went to check up on him and, upon discovering the victim, they called 911 and were instructed to perform life-saving measures. They continued until first responders arrived on the scene.

8:15 p.m. UPDATE:

Lynchburg Police say a 25-year-old man is dead.

Investigators say police got a call around 6:43 p.m. concerning a cardiac arrest. As crews were arriving, the call escalated to a chest wound, possibly caused by a firearm.

Lynchburg Police say life-saving measures were attempted, but the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at Lynchburg General Hospital.

The victim has not been identified.

This is an active investigation.
